Current political context in Canada
Since coming to power, Trudeau has been a symbol of modernity for many Canadians. However, Canadian politics are increasingly polarized. Liberals are facing a stronger Conservative opposition and loss of confidence from segments of the electorate.
The latest polls show a steady decline in Trudeau’s popularity. Many Canadians are unhappy with the way in which Canada manages key issues, including the economy and the environment. In 2015, Trudeau embodied the hope of change. Today, that hope is lost in the void.
Scandals, such as the SNC-Lavalin affair, and criticism of pandemic management or international relations have left their mark. Each crisis has shaken the confidence of its population. Over the years, Trudeau has had to defend his record constantly, which has further polarized debate.
Consequences of a resignation
If Justin Trudeau were to leave today, it would indeed cause a major upheaval in the Canadian political sphere, But it would be a change widely expected by the population and desired by members of his own party who have expressed it publicly. The impact on the Liberal Party would be significant.
Within the Liberal Party, a resignation could divide members. Some would see this as an opportunity for renewal, while others would fear a period of instability. Trudeau, despite his controversies, remains an emblematic figure for some of the supporters.
Resignation could reduce the chances of the Liberals in the next election. Without a strong and charismatic leader, the party risks losing ground to the conservatives. The undecided electorate, already sceptical, could turn to alternatives.
If Trudeau leaves, who would be ready to take over? Names like Chrystia Freeland or François-Philippe Champagne are circulating. However, no potential successor appears to have the same national appeal as Trudeau in 2015. Finding a replacement who can bring people together would be a crucial challenge.
The "blackface" case
In 2019, photos and videos of Trudeau in "blackface" surfaced, causing a stir. The Prime Minister is depicted wearing black at several events:
- A costume party in 2001 where he appears disguised as Aladdin, face and hands painted in dark brown
- A show at the high school where he sings "Day-O" with blackened face
- A video from the early 1990s showing him also climbing in black
While Trudeau apologized, recognizing the racist nature of these acts, the incident seriously tarnished his image as a progressive and inclusive leader of wokism.
The Liberal Party of Canada’s Future
Justin Trudeau’s departure could well mark a turning point for the Liberal Party. But the future will depend largely on the strategic choices ahead.
To regain the confidence of voters, the Liberal Party will have to reinvent its message. This could include new policies on social justice, inequality and the environment. Transparency and a citizen-centred approach will also be essential.
Leadership change can lead to internal divisions. Some factions may drift away, weakening the party. In addition, the emergence of new central or progressive parties could further fragment Canada’s political landscape, making upcoming elections even more unpredictable.
The resignation of Justin Trudeau, if it happens, would be a turning point for the Liberal Party of Canada. While his leadership has shaped the country’s political landscape for nearly a decade, his departure could either pave the way for renewal or precipitate the party’s decline. For the Liberals, it will be based on their ability to adapt quickly, join forces and present a clear vision for Canada’s future.
